Card-friendly does not mean card-only

Many visitors use foreign cards in Korean shops, restaurants and hotels. That does not guarantee every terminal, online checkout or transit machine will accept your particular card. Issuer checks, supported networks and service registration can differ.

There is no useful universal acceptance percentage for your individual itinerary. Start with the transactions you cannot postpone: airport transfer, accommodation and your first meal. Verify those rather than assuming every later purchase will work.

Separate three payment systems

Payment Important distinction
Shop or restaurant purchase Merchant terminal and issuer approval
Transport stored-value top-up Charging methods for the chosen card
App booking Foreign-card support plus account requirements

A card working at a café does not prove it can recharge a transport card. WOWPASS also separates its shopping balance from the Tmoney transport function; check the correct balance before boarding.

Prepare a backup that can survive a failure

Carry a second usable card or another supported method separately from the main wallet. Confirm foreign-use settings and how to contact the issuer from abroad. Keep account access available without relying on an SMS method that stops working when you change SIMs.

Do not hand card details or authentication codes to someone offering to “fix” a declined payment. Use the merchant’s normal terminal and the issuer’s official support channel.

How much cash should you carry?

Build the amount from expected cash-dependent tasks: initial transit charging, a small market purchase or a backup meal. Add a contingency appropriate to your travel style. A fixed amount is not equally suitable for one afternoon in Seoul and a family trip across several regions.

Check ATM support, withdrawal fees and currency-conversion choices before accepting a transaction. Avoid exchanging a large sum solely because one terminal rejected one card.

If payment is declined

Ask whether the transaction completed before trying again. Check for a receipt or authorization notification so repeated attempts do not create confusing holds. Try a different supported payment method, then contact the issuer if the problem repeats at unrelated merchants.

A temporary authorization is not always a final settled charge. Retain the receipt and resolve disputes through the merchant and issuer rather than immediately posting card screenshots online.

Run a first-day payment check

Confirm one small purchase, the transport balance and the accommodation’s deposit or payment terms. Keep enough usable funds outside the phone in case it loses power. The detailed payment guide explains the wider backup plan; the practical goal is to avoid one declined card stopping the entire day.
