When NAVER Map is most useful

NAVER Map is useful after you already know where you want to go and need reliable local details. It combines a nationwide place database with walking, public-transport, taxi, and driving routes.

You can use basic place search and directions without a Korean phone number. Location permission is needed only when you want to use your current position.

Why travelers use it in Korea

1. Detailed information for everyday places

NAVER Map covers restaurants, cafes, hospitals, pharmacies, salons, shops, parking lots, and other places used in daily life. A place page may show opening hours, closed days, menus, prices, phone numbers, parking information, photos, and reviews in one place.

2. Place search connects to local reviews and photos

Travelers can compare the map location with visitor reviews, photos, menus, and available booking links. NAVER also provides multilingual translation for many Korean reviews and place filters, but some text may remain in Korean.

3. Public-transport directions match the Korean network

Routes can combine walking, buses, and subways. Check the estimated time, fare, transfers, departure and arrival information, and the final walking section before leaving. Subway exits and boarding or alighting guidance can reduce unnecessary walking at large stations.

4. Building entrances and alleys are easier to check

A road-name address may lead to a large building rather than the entrance you need. Check the Korean building or shop name, nearby subway exit, landmarks, street view, and the final section of the route.

5. Some places connect to booking and ordering

Some restaurants, salons, attractions, classes, and other businesses offer booking or ordering through NAVER. Treat this as an optional linked service. Sign-in, identity verification, phone, and payment requirements can vary.

Best search tip: start with the road-name address

Searching the destination’s Korean road-name address is usually the safest starting point. A business name can be translated differently, and chains may have many branches with similar names.

Before choosing a result, compare all four items:

  • Korean place name
  • District or neighborhood
  • Road-name address
  • Nearest station or landmark

If the address includes a floor or suite number, first find the main building. Then use the place page, directory, or booking confirmation to locate the exact unit.

Open MY → Settings → Language and select English, Japanese, or Simplified Chinese. On iPhone, the language can also be changed in the device settings for NAVER Map.

Screenshot 2 — Compare driving and taxi estimates

After selecting a destination, switch between public transport, driving, walking, and cycling at the top. The driving view shows the estimated time, distance, live traffic, and an approximate taxi fare. The taxi amount is only an estimate and may change with traffic, tolls, late-night surcharges, and the actual pickup point.

Confirm the Korean name, address, opening status, nearest station, photos, and any branch label. Menu, parking, booking, and review information varies by business.

A simple arrival workflow

  1. Copy the Korean road-name address from your hotel or booking confirmation.
  2. Search it in NAVER Map and confirm the correct branch.
  3. Save a screenshot of the Korean name and address in case your connection drops.
  4. Start directions and check the last walking section before leaving the station.
  5. Show the Korean name or address to staff if you need help.

What may still be difficult

English search results are improving, but Korean names and addresses remain more reliable for less famous places. Some reviews and linked booking pages may not be fully translated.

Do not assume that a visible Book or Order button guarantees foreign-card payment. Check the final payment screen and keep an offline alternative, such as paying at the venue.
