Pair the error with its stage

The same repair is not appropriate for every appearance of 0x80070002 or 0x80240034. In Windows Update and Update history, record the complete error, KB number and failed attempt time. Establish whether downloading, installing or rolling back after a restart failed.

This guide assumes Windows still reaches the desktop. If it does not, use the update recovery guide to choose a boot-appropriate route rather than launching desktop commands you cannot safely access.

Check the easy-to-reverse conditions

Connect power, save documents and check for a pending restart. Review free system-drive space, date and time, and actual web access. A connected Wi-Fi icon does not prove the update service can communicate.

Situation Record First comparison
Download fails KB, code, network Connection and storage
Installation fails Time and restart state Troubleshooter and history
Changes are undone Exact message and recurrence Recovery and known issues
Organization-managed device Management information IT support

Do not disable a corporate VPN, proxy or security policy merely because a consumer troubleshooting page suggests a network change.

Run the troubleshooter and keep its result

In Windows 11, look under Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters for Windows Update. Some versions hand the process to Get Help. Note what was fixed and what remains unresolved.

If asked to restart, save your work and restart normally, then test the same KB once. A different error on the next attempt is new evidence. Repeatedly pressing Retry without comparing results makes the history harder to interpret.

Cache deletion is an advanced branch

Internet command bundles often stop services and remove SoftwareDistribution immediately. That is not a universal first step and may interfere with work already in progress. Follow the official advanced procedure only after basic checks and after understanding the effect on this device.

On a managed PC, update delivery may depend on organization-specific infrastructure. Ask the administrator rather than changing service startup types or permanently disabling updates.

Check system files when symptoms support it

If other Windows components also fail, system-file repair may be relevant. Complete DISM before SFC in an administrator terminal and read each final result. The DISM guide explains failure codes and logs.

Do not run several repair sessions and update attempts at once. A progress percentage, including 100%, is not by itself a safe signal to interrupt installation or rollback.

Escalate with a compact evidence record

Provide the Windows version, KB number, full code, failed stage, free space and troubleshooter outcome. Include whether the problem follows one update or every update. Disabling Windows Update permanently hides the symptom rather than fixing its cause; the appropriate next action may instead depend on a known release issue or management policy.
